Every day, Utah clinicians make decisions without access to all the necessary patient information. This is because information is often scattered among different healthcare organizations that do not share information. Scattered information wastes precious clinician time, causes unnecessary ordering of repeat laboratory and radiology tests, reduces the accuracy of diagnoses, and may contribute to medical errors.
By using the Clinical Health Information Exchange (cHIE), physicians will drastically reduce time and expense associated with missing patient information and duplicate tests.
UHIN cHIE Solution
Beginning in 2009, the UHIN cHIE network will begin connecting clinicians to hospitals, payers, labs, Electronic Medical Health (EHR) systems, pharmacies, and to other clinicians. It will enable authorized clinicians, with patient consent, to electronically locate and review patient information that may be scattered across multiple health care organizations.
The cHIE also allows payers to obtain necessary patient information to pay claims in a timelier manner. In the past, a payer would have to send multiple requests for records which would consume valuable office staff time in fulfilling these requests. These records would have to be sent by fax, mail, or resolved with multiple telephone calls. With the cHIE, this may all be accomplished electronically, which will free your staff to focus its efforts on patient care.
The patient information that can be accessed may include previous medical events, diagnoses, tests, medication histories, allergies, relevant documents, and other information. Patients will give consent to share this information, and consent will be updated at participating hospitals and clinician offices. Learn more about the "Patient Consent" model.
Any licensed Utah clinician may participate in the cHIE
Participation is an easy process. You would need to complete the cHIE enrollment process for clinicians at our cHIE Membership Page. This primarily involves completing the necessary paperwork and connecting your EMR. If you wish to use your own EMR, that's the ideal solution. If you don't have an EMR, UHIN offers a baseline EMR (e-Lite) as part of your cHIE membership.
The organizations that participate in the cHIE network have agreed to make information accessible to authorized medical professionals, with patient permission, by building secure electronic connections to the cHIE. The cHIE network will authenticate all clinical users and provide privacy protections that comply with Federal and State regulations as well as HIPAA privacy guidelines.
